Characteristics
The alpaca wool is soft, warm and durable.
The fibre of the alpaca is fine and thin and textiles made from alpaca wool are extraordinarily soft. The fibre of the alpaca wool contains small air bubbles, which provide it with a unique thermal ability. Textiles of alpaca wool can therefore be woven very finely yet still give and retain warmth. The structure of the fibres makes manufactured textiles of alpaca wool much more durable than other known wool fibers such as sheep wool and cashmere wool.
The fineness of wool is measured in the diameter of the wool fiber and the measurement is done in microns: 1 micron = 1 thousanth of a millimeter. The fibre of the adult alpaca has a fineness of 26-35 microns whereas the fiber of the alpaca kid has a fineness of 22-23 microns.
